Holistic Health Care Explained: What Parents Should Know

Some conditions are more treatment resistant to medications than others. Side effects aside, medications work wonders for most conditions. Many parents have tried medications and therapies for conditions like ADHD and Autism yet are still struggling with the problems created by those conditions when children are affected.

Some parents are not able to sleep because their child is not able to sleep at night, even with medications. This creates a bigger problem when the entire family is affected and sleep deprived. Soon it takes a greater toll and in time almost everyone in the family is affected in some way when it continues without relief.

That’s often when parents turn to Naturopathic or Holistic approaches which are more individualized assessment and care. Individualized medical approaches often work better for certain conditions. They’ve tried and feel let down by the population-based approach of trying different prescriptions. Holistic approach looks at and addresses the patient as a whole integrated system and not just separate parts or symptoms.

Two Different Schools of Training and Practice:- The one size for all population-based medicine vs the Individualized Approach

A main difference between a child’s PC’s approach and a Holistic Healthcare provider’s approach is training and style: one trained to address issues by prescribing medications approved for the population in general. The other is trained to take the Integrative Individualized approach

When it comes to children’s health, parents desire approaches that are effective, safe, and supportive. Especially when concerns are ongoing or chronic recurring conditions. Many families want to address their child’s issues more deeply rather than focusing only on symptoms.

This is where holistic health care has gained attention — as a way of looking at health through a broader, whole-child lens- The Individualized Approach

What Is Holistic Health Care?

Holistic health care is an approach that considers the whole child, not just symptoms or diagnoses. It looks at how different aspects of a child’s life are connected, including:

  • Physical health and development

  • Effect of diet on Emotional and mental well-being

  • Nutrition and daily routines

  • Sleep, stress, and energy levels

  • Environmental and family influences

The aim is to better understand why certain challenges may be occurring, rather than focusing only on managing outward signs.
